While the exact science behind laser tattoo removal can get a little complicated, we know our patients who are considering the ink removal procedure are still more than a little curious as to how it works. Breaking it down simply though, the enlighten™ laser system we use is a “picosecond laser,” which means it creates pulses of one trillionth of a second to breakdown the ink molecules embedded in the skin. (For a better understanding of how it works, check out the video below.)
Once the tattoo ink has been broken up, it then gets carried away like any other small foreign substance that your body encounters. In essence, your blood stream carries it away at an expedited rate compared to the natural process of a tattoo fading over time.
