Your skin is nourished by miles of blood vessels that carry nutrients and oxygen to every cell. But if you can see the veins on your face, they’re probably damaged. Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are web-like clusters of broken veins that may mar your otherwise clear skin.

If you have unsightly spider veins or visible facial veins, Jeffrey Gosin, MD removes them permanently. He and our team at Shore Vascular and Vein Center in Somers Point, New Jersey offer different treatment options for embarrassing facial veins.

You don’t need those spider veins

First, rest assured that you won’t damage your skin by removing unsightly facial veins. If you can see your capillaries and other blood vessels just under the surface of your skin, it means they’re broken.

Spider veins can be caused by a wide variety of traumatizing events, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Heat exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Injuries
  • Pressure from sneezing or vomiting
  • Heavy alcohol use

However, you may also develop spider veins as you age and your veins begin to degrade and widen. Genes may also play a role in whether you have facial veins or not.

No matter what caused them in your individual case, visible facial veins are broken blood vessels. They aren’t doing your skin any favors. Not only do they interfere with the clarity of your skin, they actually slow down the circulation of oxygen and nutrients.

Remove the damage

Once you realize that your visible facial veins aren’t actively nourishing your skin and are, in fact, detracting from its attractiveness, you may be eager to be rid of them. However, any DIY options you may find on the internet will only further damage your skin.

Nevertheless, you don’t have to live with visible facial veins. We offer two options that collapse the veins so they eventually disappear for good.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that removes visible veins on the face and body with a series of injections. Dr. Gosin administers a special solution directly into the broken, widened veins.

The solution irritates and inflames the damaged veins, which causes them to collapse. Your circulation then reroutes itself to healthier veins. Eventually, the collapsed veins disappear.

Laser therapy

Using a high-powered green laser called the excel® V by Cutera®, Dr. Gosin targets the laser’s photons to the red pigment in the hemoglobin of your damaged spider veins. The blood cells in the veins absorb the photons, generating heat that destroys the vessel. The vein then shrinks and eventually dissolves, as your body absorbs and eliminates the debris.

You may need a series of laser treatments to completely rid yourself of your facial veins. Expect to see anywhere from a 50%-100% reduction in your unwanted visible facial veins after 1-3 laser treatments.
