Telangiectasias, more commonly known as “spider veins,” are tiny visible blood vesselsthat appear as red, purple, and/or blue lines within the skin, often in a twisting or “web-like” pattern. Spider veins are usually harmless. However, they can occasionally cause symptoms of burning, itching and localized irritation when they are numerous or densely clustered. They most commonly appear on the legs, but can occur anywhere on the body.
Spider veins are very common, affecting more than of 50% of individuals. There is no one specific cause for spider veins. Most commonly, they are related to genetic factors and family history of varicose or spider veins. Hormonal factor, pregnancy, localized trauma, and standing/sitting for long periods of time may also increase risk of developing spider veins. They are more common with increasing age but may occur in individuals of any age.
While not medically dangerous, spider veinsare a common cause of aesthetic concern and embarrassment due to their unsightly appearance. At Shore Vascular & Vein Center, we offer several safe and effective treatments for spider veins.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a treatment widely used to effectively eliminate spider veins, and small varicose veins. This is most commonly used to treat spider veins on the legs, but may be used for prominent veins in other locations, when indicated. During this procedure, a sclerotherapy solution is injected directly into the unwanted vein which irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse, be reabsorbed by the surrounding tissue and ultimately fade away. The sclerotherapy procedure is performed with a fine needle and small amounts of sclerosing solution. Most patients report minimal to no discomfort during treatment. Several treatments are usually required to reach the final desired results, with each treatment session usually lasting less than 30 minutes. Side effects are generallymild and temporary and physical activity may be continued immediately following treatment. The use of compression stockings is often recommended for a brief period following treatment. Protecting the treated areas from direct sun exposure following treatment is usually recommended. Specific instructions and expectations related to each person’s unique situation are discussed in detail during the consultation.
Excel V Laser
The state-of-the-art Excel V laser is a technologically advanced treatment that uses light-based laser energy to immediately destroy the treatedveins. It is highly effective in eliminating unsightly veins on the face, legs and body. Treatment time depends upon the number of veins and areas being treated but can typically be completed in less than 30 minutes with only mild to discomfort which lasts only seconds. Mild bruising following treatment may occur. It usually resolves within a few days, or at times a bit longer, depending on the area of the body being treated. Repeat treatment may be required to obtain the final results.
Facial Veins
Telangiectasias also may occur on the face, where they are a form of Rosacea. This causes a red flushing appearance, often with enlarged dilated veins around the nose or on the cheeks. Individuals suffering from this condition often feel self-conscious and embarrassed by it, due to the obvious appearance on the face where the veins can be difficult, or impossible to cover with makeup. This condition is common in both women and men. The Excel V Laser, described above, is an excellent treatment for facial veins and Rosacea.
