Normally our blog posts cover varicose vein treatments (in the legs), but varicose veins aren’t the only kind that pop up. As serious as varicose veins symptoms can be, spider veins can also cause frustration (although they’re usually less uncomfortable than their bulging counterparts). While spider veins – just like varicose veins – aren’t just a cosmetic problem, they can affect self-esteem and confidence because in reality, they do have a cosmetic element that many people would prefer not to deal with.

Luckily, spider veins are easily treatable with a quick out-patient procedure. There are actually a few spider vein treatment options and a professional vein specialist like Dr. Gosin and the team at Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point, New Jersey will help you choose the method that’s best for your situation.

The Excel V Laser System is a state-of-the-art technology used to help get rid of spider veins (as well as varicose veins, rosacea and angiomas). It uses a high-powered green laser to target abnormal blood vessels and pigments in the affected area. Excel V is actually a very effective way of treating spider veins; because of their small size, a laser allows vein specialists to precisely treat the exact location of each vein. After being hit by the laser, the skin is returned to its natural tone and color. While lasers may be intimidating, the Excel V has a specialized cooling technology to keep patients from actually feeling the heat of the laser. Since the procedure is non-invasive and there aren’t any incisions, side-effects, downtime and recovery time are basically non-existent.

Another option for treating spider veins is sclerotherapy. It’s often the treatment of choice for smaller vein issues like the often miniscule spider veins.  The sclerotherapy procedure involves injecting a sclerosing agent directly into the vein. This solution eliminates the unsightly veins by irritating the inside of the offending veins, causing them to collapse on themselves. When this happens, the appearance of the spider veins improves and any of the discomfort associated with them, such as light burning or itching often goes away as well. And just like new technologies have made laser therapy less painful, advances have also helped sclerotherapy become more comfortable as well. Newer sclerosing solutions, such as Asclera, have eliminated the burning sensation that was once associated with the treatment. Appointment using this method can last from 15 to 45 minutes, so again, it’s another quick out-patient procedure that has lasting results since the veins typically will not appear again.

It’s important to note, that while treatment of veins are often covered by insurance companies, they typically need to be related to a diagnosis of venous reflux disease. An experienced phlebologist can diagnosis the cause of the spider veins through ultrasonography testing, which will help determine the size and dysfunction of the veins and in turn, the likelihood of coverage.
