You wouldn’t call a plumber to fix your electricity. Likewise, you wouldn’t call a carpenter to fix your air-conditioning. The same principle applies to your healthcare. You wouldn’t go to an eye doctor to treat your heart or a dermatologist to treat your lungs. So why wouldn’t you seek the same expertise when having vein treatment? The answer is, you should. Your veins are an important part of your circulatory system. You should seek a specialist with the proper training, experience and Board Certification.

There are many individuals who call themselves “vein doctors.” While there are many doctors in the United States who are properly trained and well qualified to treat varicose veins, there are others who have not completed the same rigorous type of training. Training and experience matter.

When seeking a vein treatment physician to treat your varicose veins you should investigate the individuals’ training and qualifications. A few important questions that you should have answered are:

–Is this individual a Board Certified Vascular Specialist?

-Did he or she complete a fellowship accredited by The American Board of Medical Specialties or simply take a few courses to learn the basics of vein treatment?

-Does your physician have an IAC (Intersocietal Accreditation Committee) Accredited noninvasive vascular lab to accurately diagnose your condition? Proper treatment first requires accurate diagnosis.

What is a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon?

Vascular surgeons have all completed a minimum of five years, and often as many as eight years of surgical training, with emphasis during that training on treatment of the circulatory system. Vascular surgeons are the only specialists trained in all aspects of vascular care, ranging from minimally-invasive procedures to complex surgery. They are the only physicians who are able to use all of those different types of procedures to treat the circulatory system. Therefore, when you are under the care of a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon, you will have the greatest number of vein treatment options available to you, regardless of the specifics of your condition.

A Vascular Surgeon’s training must meet rigorous requirements for them to be eligible to become Board Certified. The Board Certification process requires the physician to pass both a written and oral examination administered by The American Board of Surgery. This certification must be maintained and renewed at regular intervals to ensure that the physician has maintained the knowledge necessary to remain “current.”

What Does it Mean to be Board Certified?

“The American Board of Surgery is a nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to assess the qualification of individuals in the field of surgery.” Certification by The American Board of Surgery demonstrates a surgeon’s commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning and quality patient care. Board certification requires completion of the necessary education, training and experience. It is a prestigious designation that your vascular doctor should have achieved.
