Myth: Varicose Veins are Just a Cosmetic Problem
Fact: Many people incorrectly believe that varicose veins are just a cosmetic problem. While there certainly is a cosmetic element to varicose veins, a vascular surgeon knows they are often more than just cosmetic. Varicose veins are commonly caused by weakened valves in leg veins. This is a vascular disease called venous reflux disease. It often causes leg pain, leg fatigue, leg heaviness, swelling, and skin itching. In more serious cases it can cause permanent skin damage, leg wounds and blood clots. It is a condition that typically will get worse over time if left untreated.
Myth: Varicose Veins are only a “Female Problem”
Fact: While it’s true that varicose veins are more common in women, many men are also affected. In fact, some estimates suggest that as many as 45% of all men will develop varicose veins at some point in their lives.
Myth: Exercise Makes Varicose Veins Worse
Fact: As stated above, varicose veins are commonly caused by abnormal pooling of blood in the lower legs. While standing in one position for a long period of time will often make this worse, exercise usually has the reverse effect. Exercises, such as walking, running and other activities which involve contraction of the leg muscles actually helps to relieve some of the pooling blood. While it does not cure the underlying problem, exercise often helps to relieve some of the symptoms of varicose veins. Exercise is also very important for general health considerations. Therefore, people with varicose veins should be encouraged to exercise, not avoid exercise.
Myth: Crossing Your Legs Causes Varicose Veins
Fact: For years, people have mistakenly believed the myth that crossing one’s legs causes varicose veins. This is actually not true. No scientific evidence has ever demonstrated that varicose veins are either caused by or worsened by crossing your legs.
Myth: Varicose Veins are Only an Older Person’s Problem
Fact: While varicose veins become more common as we age, they can, and often do affect people of all ages. That is because there are a number of risk factors other than age that can affect anyone. These risks include family history, prolonged sitting or standing (usually related to one’s work) being overweight and pregnancy.
