What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your leg veins weaken or become damaged, allowing blood to pool instead of flowing efficiently back toward the heart. Over time, this pooling causes veins to stretch, bulge, and twist just beneath the skin’s surface. Common risk factors include family history, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, and increasing age.

Symptoms to Watch For

Beyond their visible, rope-like appearance, varicose veins commonly cause:

  • Aching or heaviness in the legs
  • Swelling, especially after standing
  • Itching or burning around the vein
  • Muscle cramping or restlessness at night
  • Skin discoloration in more advanced cases

Diagnosis and Treatment

At Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point, NJ , diagnosis typically begins with a physical exam and ultrasound testing in our IAC-accredited noninvasive vascular lab to evaluate blood flow and identify the source of your varicose veins. From there, Dr. Gosin recommends the most appropriate treatment, which may include venous closure, VenaSeal, or sclerotherapy for related spider veins. Varicose veins are usually not dangerous, but they can be a sign of venous reflux disease and, if left untreated, may lead to skin damage or wounds in more advanced cases.

How are varicose veins diagnosed?

Diagnosis typically includes a physical exam and an ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Is varicose vein treatment covered by insurance?

When should I see a doctor about varicose veins?

If your varicose veins cause pain, swelling, or skin changes, or simply bother you cosmetically, it’s worth scheduling an evaluation to discuss your options.
