Spider Veins
Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small, web-like red, purple, or blue vessels visible near the surface of the skin. At Shore Vascular & Vein Center, we help patients understand what’s causing their spider veins and offer safe, effective treatment options.

Spider veins develop when small blood vessels near the skin’s surface become enlarged and visible. They’re very common, affecting more than 50% of individuals, and there’s no single cause. Genetic factors and a family history of varicose or spider veins are the most common contributors, though hormonal changes, pregnancy, localized trauma, and prolonged sitting or standing can also increase risk. Spider veins become more common with age but can appear at any age.
Symptoms and Appearance
Spider veins most often appear on the legs and face, presenting as fine, web-like lines. While usually harmless, they can occasionally cause burning, itching, or localized irritation when numerous or densely clustered. For many patients, the primary concern is cosmetic, as spider veins can feel difficult to hide or cover with makeup.
Diagnosis and Treatment
At Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point, NJ , our team evaluates your spider veins to determine the best treatment approach, whether that’s sclerotherapy, laser vein removal, or a combination of both. If your spider veins are located on the face, our facial vein treatment may be more appropriate. In some cases, spider veins are related to an underlying vascular condition; our IAC-accredited vascular lab can help identify whether further evaluation is needed.
Spider Veins FAQs
What’s the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?
Spider veins are smaller, web-like vessels near the skin’s surface, while varicose veins are larger, raised, and bulging, often caused by deeper vein valve dysfunction.
Are spider veins a sign of a bigger problem?
Spider veins are usually harmless on their own, though in some cases they can be related to underlying venous reflux disease, which is worth evaluating.
What treatments are available for spider veins?
We offer sclerotherapy and laser vein removal, either alone or in combination, depending on the size and location of your spider veins.
Will spider veins come back after treatment?
Treated veins typically don’t return, though new spider veins can develop over time due to ongoing risk factors like genetics and age.
Can spider veins be prevented?
While you can’t fully prevent spider veins, staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting may help reduce your risk.
Is spider vein treatment covered by insurance?
Spider vein treatment performed for cosmetic reasons is typically not covered by insurance, though related medical conditions may be. Contact our office to confirm your coverage.
