Request an AppointmentWhat Is Restless Leg Syndrome?
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations like tingling, crawling, or aching. Symptoms typically worsen in the evening or at night and improve with movement. While RLS has several potential causes, an emerging body of research points to a connection between RLS symptoms and underlying venous insufficiency in some patients.
Symptoms of RLS
- An urge to move the legs, often paired with uncomfortable sensations
- Symptoms that worsen with rest and improve with movement
- Symptoms that are worse in the evening or at night
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
The Vein Connection
For some patients, restless leg symptoms are linked to venous reflux disease, in which faulty vein valves cause blood to pool in the legs. At Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point, NJ , we use ultrasound testing in our IAC-accredited vascular lab to evaluate whether an underlying vein condition may be contributing to your symptoms. When venous insufficiency is identified, treating it with procedures like sclerotherapy or venous closure may help relieve related restless leg symptoms.
