Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic condition that causes an abnormal buildup of fat, most often in the legs, that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. At Shore Vascular & Vein Center, we help patients understand this often-misunderstood condition and its connection to vascular health.
Request an AppointmentWhat Is Lipedema?
Lipedema is a chronic condition, almost exclusively affecting women, that causes a disproportionate, symmetrical buildup of fat in the legs, and sometimes the arms, while sparing the hands and feet. Unlike typical weight gain, lipedema fat does not respond well to diet or exercise, and the affected areas are often tender or prone to easy bruising. Lipedema tends to progress over time and can significantly affect mobility and quality of life if left unaddressed.
Lipedema and Vein Health
Because lipedema affects the legs and can restrict normal circulation over time, many patients with lipedema also develop related vein and vascular issues, including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Evaluating and treating any coexisting vein disease can help ease discomfort and support better long-term outcomes.
Diagnosis and Management
At Shore Vascular & Vein Center in Somers Point, NJ , Dr. Gosin performs a thorough evaluation, including ultrasound testing in our IAC-accredited vascular lab, to determine whether an underlying vein condition is contributing to your symptoms. While lipedema itself requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach, our team can identify and treat related vascular issues, such as venous insufficiency, that may be adding to your leg discomfort and swelling.
Lipedema FAQs
Is lipedema the same as obesity?

Lipedema almost exclusively affects women and often becomes noticeable during hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
Can lipedema affect my veins?
Yes. Many patients with lipedema also develop related vein issues, including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, due to changes in circulation.
How is lipedema diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, and ultrasound testing can help determine whether an underlying vein condition is also contributing to symptoms.
Can Shore Vascular & Vein Center treat lipedema?
Our team can evaluate and treat coexisting vascular conditions, such as venous insufficiency, that often accompany lipedema and contribute to leg discomfort.
Does treating related vein issues help with lipedema symptoms?
Addressing underlying venous insufficiency can help ease swelling and discomfort, though lipedema itself typically requires a broader, multidisciplinary treatment approach.
